ballinskelligs-night-985359
A nocturnal view of the night sky looking into the South West over McCarthy's Castle and Horse Island on Ballinskelligs Beach in County Kerry taken in the early hours of Saturday morning. The area is the only designated Gold Tier International Dark-Sky Reserve in the Northern Hemisphere and only three exist in the world. Hundreds of astronomers travel from all over the world to view the night sky from South Kerry.
On clear nights many astronomical sights can be seen with the naked eye including the beautiful band of the Milky Way, the Andromeda Galaxy, Star Clusters and Nebula’s without the aid of any astronomical equipment or filters. The South Kerry astronomy group based in Waterville have regular events and classes in astronomy.
