ECHO AND EXAMINER -The unveiling of new memorial to Antarctic explorer Edward Bransfield, who was from Ballinacurra. Bransfield became the first person to set eyes on Antarctica 200 years ago this week, on January 30, 1820. The Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces gave the keynote address at the unveiling of the monument to commemorate the Irishman acknowledged as the first person in the world to officially record spotting Antarctica.
Vice Admiral Mark Mellett delivered a speech on Edward Bransfield as the monument, by local sculptor Matt Thompson, was unveiled to his memory in his native village in Co Cork.
