The ruins of Carrigafoyle Castle, Co Kerry overlooking the Shannon Estuary. This national monument is in the care of the Commissioners of Public Works and is an excellent example of the tower-houses built in southern Ireland in the late 15th and early 16th century. The quality of the stonework in the tower is exceptional and the walls, built of long, flag-like stones were said to be impregnable in the 16th century. The castle, 16km north of Listowel, is open to the public and entry is free of charge. Pic: Larry Cummins
