Civic Reception recognising achievements of Cobh and Glounthaune Tidy Towns Committees

Cobh Municipal District has accorded a Civic Reception to the volunteers of Cobh and Glounthaune Tidy Towns Committees to mark their successes in the 2017 National Tidy Towns Awards.

Cobh Tidy Towns retained the Gold Medal they won in 2015 and 2016 while Glounthaune Tidy Towns won a South West Regional Award for Communities and Waterways.

In congratulating the two organisations, Cllr. Padraig O’Sullivan, Chair of the Cobh Municipal District said “I would like to express my thanks to all the volunteers in Cobh and Glounthaune, and to all of the Tidy Towns volunteers across the Municipal District whose dedication makes the towns better places to live. Cork County Council is proud of the success that you have brought to your respective communities and we look forward to continuing our support to you, both financial and practical, into the future. It is a source of great pride that all of the Tidy Towns Committees across the Municipal District have improved their marks year upon year, reflecting the level of community involvement across the entire Municipal District.”

Chairperson of Cobh Tidy Towns, Ruth Ring said “Cobh is now the proud recipient of 3 Gold Medals, 3 Silver Medals and 1 Bronze Medal in the National Tidy Towns Competition. In 2017 Cobh retained its Gold medal that it had won in 2015 and 2016 with 323 points placing only 8 points behind the National winner, Ennis. Cobh also won an Irish Water award in 2016 in the Best Large Town Category. Cobh has been involved in the competition for over 40 years and the fruits of the labours of Cobh Tidy Towns volunteers and Cork County Council can be seen. The entire town benefits from the dedication of so many and in the words of an adjudicator “onwards and upwards for Cobh.”

Chairperson of Glounthaune Tidy Towns, Conor O’Brien went on to say, “I want to thank the tremendous work of the volunteers in Glounthaune who have worked hard to get us where we are today. I particularly want to thank the Glounthaune Community Association and Glounthaune Men’s Shed who support our efforts to improve our village I acknowledge that support we get from Cork County Council who have worked with us for a long number of years. The Regional Award reflects the joint partnership approach taken by Cork County Council and the community in Glounthaune in developing the Nature Reserve at Harper’s Island.”
