A nocturnal view of the night sky looking into the South West over McCarthy's Castle and Horse Island on Ballinskelligs Beach in County Kerry taken in the early hours of Saturday morning. The area is the only designated Gold Tier International Dark-Sky Reserve in the Northern Hemisphere and only three exist in the world. Hundreds of astronomers travel from all over the world to view the night sky from South Kerry.
On clear nights many astronomical sights can be seen with the naked eye including the beautiful band of the Milky Way, the Andromeda Galaxy, Star Clusters and Nebula’s without the aid of any astronomical equipment or filters. The South Kerry astronomy group based in Waterville have regular events and classes in astronomy.

Inaugural Fringe Festival Announced for New Ross Piano Festival

EBONY and IRONY FRINGE FEST

An inaugural Fringe Festival to the annual New Ross Piano Festival has been announced today (Wednesday September 17), the ‘Ebony and Irony Fringe Festival’ in New Ross Co. Wexford was developed as an addendum to the already very successful New Ross Piano Festival. Which takes place for the ninth year from September 25th – 28th this year.

The ethos of the Ebony and Irony Fest is to join forces with the already established Piano Festival and expand on the events and programme on offer to create a weekend for the whole family.

Co-ordinator of the Ebony and Irony Festival, Bettie-Marie Burger-Smit said: “In order for festivals to be able to access and have continued support from various agencies like Failte Ireland, they must attract a wider audience year on year, and create and increase in visitor numbers. We decided to give a hand by creating this event, in conjunction with the local businesses, and the support of the Chamber of Commerce, to assist in expanding the offering of the Piano Festival to even wider audiences.”

The Ebony & Irony Fringe Fest has a full programme of events, kicking off with a Piano Dual between local and renowned Wexford Pianist Toddy Walsh, and South African pianist Brynmore van Wyk. “Something akin to Zorro meets Liberace” with drama, humour and flare at 9pm on Friday 26 September – followed by continued piano and sing-a-longs.

Saturday is for the whole family, with workshops in various crafts, Looming, satire and humour, art, music syncopation and the list goes on – all in the name of fun. There will also be a full day of activities in Craft Central on the Quay, the Dunbrody Famine Ship as well as participating businesses and St Michael’s Theatre.

For the more active the annual Brandon House Hotel Hill run has been scheduled for 11am, in the morning, and this year it will form part of the Jack and Jill Foundation Hill Climb fundraiser.

On Saturday evening at the Brandon House Hotel the day ends with a stand up comedy night featuring two new and upcoming comedians. Fabu D is a Nigerian born comedian from Dublin that has built up quite the reputation on both sides of the border for his acerbic observations of Irish society, especially the Dublin community, and Steve Bennett – a native of Portlaoise who’s musical comedy has already delighted audiences in New Ross in the past. This will be followed by music, and some more entertainment on the resident piano. This is a strictly adults only event with strong language.

The Sunday will see the Fringe Fest end with the help of Guinness who has proudly engaged supported the festival, to celebrate their very own black and white offering in support of the Ebony & Irony Fringe Fest with an afternoon of live music. Weather permitting.

Successful Battle Rages in Enniscorthy

Thousands of spectators gathered in the heritage town of Enniscorthy over the weekend as pike charging Rebels and musket wielding Redcoats recreated the most significant battle in Ireland’s history, the 1798 Rebellion.

A crowd of over 300 Rebels and Redcoats took part in the third annual battle re-enactment on Vinegar Hill.

Each year the Battle of Vinegar Hill Re-enactment attracts thousands of spectators to Enniscorthy as the town explodes into rebellion with cannon bombardments, cavalry assaults, muskets volleys and pike charges, clouding the town in the sights, sounds, and smells of battle and according to organiser’s this years battle was the largest both on and off the battlefield.

Commenting on the free event Jacqui Hynes, Manager at the 1798 National Rebellion Centre said, “This years battle on the famous Vinegar Hill site has been a fantastic success. We were delighted to have a visit from the French Ambassador Mr Jean-Pierre Thébault whom this year visited in his personal time with a view to developing and supporting the French links that this Battle Reenactment holds; given that the ideals of those involved in the French revolution were what inspired the pike wielding rebels here in Enniscorthy.”

The highlight of the weekend in Wexford was the staging of two full-scale battle re-enactments on view freely to the public, where on Saturday afternoon the Rebels captured Enniscorthy Town and on Sunday the Redcoats took Vinegar Hill. Visitors observed the two armies fight amidst gunfire and explosions, pike charges and cannon fire on the notorious battleground overlooking Enniscorthy. The crown forces also included cavalry and cannons as they launched their assault on the hill.

Plenty of action was on offer across Enniscorthy town as the rebels made camp of the 1798 Rebellion and the Crown Force Soldiers took siege in Enniscorthy Castle and a ‘Rebels V’s Redcoats’ polocrosse match closed the weekends festivities.

5th class at St Mary's National School Cobh pictured with their prints on exhibition as part of the 'Highlight Your Habitiat' exhibition at Sirius Arts Centre, Cobh, Co. Cork.

Highlight Your Habitat is a project funded by Cork County Council's Arts Office and Environment section, in partnership with Cork Printmakers and Sirius Arts Centre. It also involved educational facilitators from the Irish Peatland Conservation Council and Fota Wildlife Park. As part of this project 164 fifth class students, from six national schools in Great Island, were given workshops in Drawing, Drypoint and Mono-Screenprinting in their schools. These workshops were facilitated by Cork Printmakers. Each school had 4 printmaking workshops and 2 workshops facilitated by the education officers from Fota Wildlife Park and The Irish Peatland Conservation Council.
The participating schools are: Cobh Mixed National School; Gaelscoil Sheán Uí Éigeartaigh; Bunscoil Rinn an Cabhraigh, Scoil Iósaef Naofa; St. Mary’s National School and Walterstown National School.
The aim of the project was to introduce students to the theme of biodiversity and to study their local habitat through active learning and to represent their learning visually through printmaking workshops. As well as learning new printmaking skills, the children were free to explore artistically, what they had learned about the habitats in their schools

A Red Squirrel sharing the spoils on a bird table in
Aughrim, Wicklow.
Red squirrel numbers in Ireland have been on the decline for the better part of a century, indeed, in many parts of the country, particularly the south, they have disappeared completely. The decline in numbers can be attributed to two main factors. The first factor was the reduction in forestry during the mid 19th century and the second the introduction of the American grey squirrel in the late19th century as an ornamental species. Over 250 Cynets and Brigini from all over Munster and beyond got a 'hands on' experience encouraging the girls to build, design, discover and experiment to the best of their abilities.Throughout the day participants were encouraged to become junior environmental detectives, discover the science behind bubbles, enrol in the “Wacky School of Science”, investigate the “Top 10 experiments you are not allowed to do at home" or discover the fizz in sherbet at “The Fizzy Factor” and finally experience the world of some amazing creatures, including reptiles, small mammals and birds of prey. The event forms part of Brigín Day with similar activities taking place in Dublin and Belfast. The main aim for the day is for the girls to get a 'hands on' opportunity to use their imaginations and to encourage the girls to build, design, discover and experiment to the best of their abilities.

9 of the most up and coming bands in Ireland laying the foundations to raise the roof for 'Cork Rocks the House' Sat 21st of April cork opera house.
Pic Clare Keogh

Extended Caption

Cork Opera House throws open its door and rips its seats out (how very rock and roll) this Saturday 21st April at 8pm for the ultimate of rock fests with some of the finest of Corks upcoming and renowned bands storming the stage for a ‘rock-tastic’ standing gig. With Oxygen not happening this summer, Cork Rocks is determined to fill that rock void delivering 9 bands of superior talent to the Opera House stage just without the mud and wellies.

Cork Rocks is a series of events which has been happening over the course of the last number of months and continues to deliver the goods in each venue it visits. The brain child of Stephen Manning, one of Cork Opera House’s own talented stage technicians, Cork Rocks The House is a natural step to be taken by this entrepreneurial ‘techie’. After years of working on the music scene in Cork and further afield, Stephen has worked with some of the finest acts nationally and internationally. Cork Rocks the House sees his vision of Cork being a hub for musical expression come to life with the musical prowess of 9 different original bands rocking the stage where the legend that was Rory Gallagher played in 1987. These upcoming bands are ready to make the same musical journey as this Irish legend, starting with the mother of all stages in Cork, Cork Opera House.

The roof is sure to raised on this night with complete original sets being played by the likes of Slow Motion Heroes, Jodavino, Time Is A Thief, Rob the Nation, and many many more. Get your tickets now for the ultimate event in your music calendar.

The full line-up includes:

Headline: Slow Motion Heroes
Jodavino
Time Is A Thief
Rob The Nation
The Billy Kennedy Band
The David Nelligan Thing
Jack O’Rourke & Band
Dimitry Datus
Tomás McCarthy & Eric Doherty
